Late yesterday evening Southampton confirmed that Claude Puel had had his contract terminated with immediate effect.

With Puel’s future in doubt for a while and known issues with some players are reported, it’s not a great surprise to see him move on now but a brief statement from saintsfc read.

‘Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year. The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure. We wish Claude well for the future.’

The statement went on to confirm that a search for a new management team was now well underway and they were confident that they would secure the ‘right fit’ in line with the ‘long term vision’ of the club.

Earlier today Puel also released a statement talking about his time at the club and he was grateful to the fans for the support he received.

‘It has been tremendously enjoyable to manage in the unbelievable and unique environment of the Premier League. However, today marks the end of the current chapter in my management career. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all the players, staff at the club`s training ground and at St Mary`s, and all others who gave their very best on a daily basis for Southampton Football Club.’

He went on to add.

‘I also say a very big thank you indeed to the Southampton fans, who gave me their tremendous support and backing over the course of last season. I also give my gratitude to the club itself for the opportunity to manage in the Premier League, and be part of a very exciting season for the club, players and fans in reaching a cup final at Wembley and also participating in a European campaign. Finally, I wish everyone at and associated with Southampton Football Club all the very best for the future.’

With a few names already linked to the club in recent weeks with the speculation Puel would be departing, we should soon know who the new man is.
