Southampton are being linked to Lille midfielder Thiago Mendes, according to French outlet La Voix Du Nord. The defensive midfielder is valued at £22.5 million by website Transfermarkt but Saints could face tough competition for his signature.
The 27-year-old Brazilian is also wanted by Lyon, who they see as a replacement for the departing Tanguy Ndombele. The Frenchman is expected to sign for Tottenham, leaving a void in the Lyon midfield.
The La Voix Du Nord report suggests Lille have set the price for Mendes at €25 million (£22.40 million) with the player having three years remaining on his contract.
The midfielder started his career in Brazil with Goias before securing a move to Sao Paulo. Two years ago he made his move to Europe signing for Lille for £8.10 million. Although listed as a defensive midfielder, he did provide four assists in Ligue 1 last season.
Earlier in the week Saints confirmed a boardroom restructure. With that complete, the focus can be switched fully to player arrivals and departures at St Mary’s.
The club has already signed Moussa Djenepo and lodged a bid for Birmingham striker Che Adams. That bid has not yet been accepted by the Blues.
