It’s being reported that Southampton are chasing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard.

The 25-year-old was part of Denmark’s World Cup squad out in Russia this summer, and although West Ham United are tentatively linked with him as well, Sky Sports have suggested that their ‘sources’ understand that tentative initial talks have taken place between both clubs but we are still at the stage of trying to agree a transfer fee.

For those watching the action over in Russia, Vestergaard was an unused substitute in each of their four matches as they went out to Croatia on penalties at the last 16 stage, so sadly that doesn’t give many clues as to what type of defender he is, but he did make 32 appearances in the Bundesliga last season for his current side – scoring three times.

He’s played in Germany since 2011 and previously had spells with Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim and from the stats I can find, he’s scored a total of 16 goals across his career in 186 starting appearances, with a further 23 showings from the bench.

One to watch possibly?
