Late yesterday evening Southampton confirmed that an agreement had been struck with Rangers to see midfielder Steven Davis make a return to Ibrox.

Speculation on the rumour mill suggesting that the Northern Ireland international would return to his former club this January window has been rumbling on since the last transfer window and it only increased owing to his lack of game time under former manager Mark Hughes. It seems by the time Ralph Hasenhuttl had arrived, the decisions had been mostly made and our gaffer had already spoken about making a move easy if it could be done for the 34-year-old.

He leaves St Mary’s Stadium with 185 starting appearances to his name, with an additional 41 showings from the bench – across those games he returned 14 goals but his impact was obviously greater than that given his leadership role.

He moves on a half season long deal, with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.

It’s a shame we haven’t had the chance to give him a proper send-off, but I can’t imagine he won’t be back at some point in the future given his years with us.
