It’s long been suggested that Steven Davis’ time at St Mary’s Stadium was up and that a return to Ibrox at Rangers was a likely scenario come the opening of the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old made the move from Scotland back in 2012 and is now entering the final six months of his deal with Southampton and previous speculation has said that having fallen out of favour, we would be willing to sanction a termination of his deal to ease a move through for him in recognition of the service that he’s given us.

Sky Sports have repeated that angle this week, and have stated clearly that we are ‘willing’ to let him leave if Rangers come up with an ‘agreeable contract offer’ for the Northern Ireland international.

The issue obviously is wages being a stumbling block, but with how long this rumour has been doing the rounds I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t already a ballpark deal in place, as Davis would know he’ll have to take a wage cut to ensure he gets greater game time as he comes to the end of his career now.

Hopefully, a deal can be sorted quickly that suits all as many feel he has lots left to give Southampton, so a return to Rangers would work for him.
