The main squad played against FC Thun in Switzerland. They lost 4-2 but at least made the score more respectable after trailing 4-0 at on time.

The reserves or Under-21 squad now under new coach Martin Hunter went to Havant and Waterlooville where the lost 2-1.

Alan Pardew didn’t appear unduly concerned as he stressed that this was a game which probably came too soon in the pre-season training.

He stressed how tired the team looked after three hard training periods per day, and that it was also likely that they were feeling the effects of the sun.

He told Jordan Sibley,Club Spokesman, ‘We have worked really hard over the last few day, perhaps too hard. Continuing he added that they looked tired after training that morning.

He also added that if the team were to return to play FC Thun in a few weeks he would expect a much closer game even against the quality that the Swiss team had.

Meanwhile in Havant the Under-21 team had their first match under their new boss. Martin Hunter also seemed pleased by what he had seen even though his side lost.

The main thing for him was the way the team tried to do the thinngs that he and Jason Dodd put across at half-time. He also said he was pleased with the approach play and the chances we made. Including the disallowed goal.
