It was being reported in the build-up to today’s January transfer window deadline that Southampton striker Charlie Austin was available to leave the club if a suitable deal could be agreed.

With the hours ticking down to the 11pm deadline, Sky Sports have reported this afternoon that four Premier League clubs have been in for the 29-year-old, but their approaches were loan based and we are only interested in doing a permanent deal this month.

If there isn’t a permanent option, it seems likely the former Queens Park Rangers man will stay but you would presume it would bring an end to any interest we may have in Birmingham City striker Che Adams who has been heavily linked this week.

Adams does receive a passing comment in the Austin claim by Sky, but the update there is that talks have effectively stalled.

Whether we continue in talks with any of those four clubs for Austin remains to be seen but with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking of trying to find a ‘win, win’ solution, we may have rejected any straight loan suggestions but be open to a loan to buy, or an obligation clause.
