Late yesterday evening Southampton announced that Academy graduate Michael Obafemi has signed a new long-term three and a half year contract at St Mary’s Stadium keeping him with us until the summer of 2022.

Obafemi is the latest success story from our youth set up at the club and since being recruited from Leyton Orient back in 2016, he has risen quickly through the ranks, making his debut in the 2017/18 campaign in the game against Tottenham Hotspur. His first appearance this year was in the absolute humping by Manchester City back in September, but he now boasts two senior starts, along with five substitute showings and the return of one goal, that came in his last showing back ahead of Christmas Day in the win over Huddersfield Town.

He also received his first Republic of Ireland full international cap earlier this year.

With him working his way back to fitness and looking to impress Ralph Hasenhuttl, he told saintsfc.

“I’ll always be thankful to the club for sticking by me, and I just want to show everyone what I’ve got. I’m determined to show the fans and everyone at the club why I’ve been given a three-and-a-half-year deal.”
