It was being reported this afternoon that Southampton manager Mark Hughes had identified Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn as a transfer target but to open up a possible deal in that direction it meant that we were now willing to listen to offers for former England goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

The 30-year-old former Celtic man was our No 1 but with last season’s struggles and poor form of his own, he lost his place between the sticks and was admirably replaced by Alex McCarthy who kept a number of clean sheets as we eventually avoided relegation into the Championship and secured our Premier League status.

Having been initially dropped by former manager Mauricio Pellegrino, after he signed a new five-year extension last summer, Forster hasn’t taken to the pitch since Boxing Day and that did bring to an end his run of 76 consecutive matches in the side.

The report by Sky Sports is pure supposition with nothing of real note, but it’s an educated guess given how McCarthy seized his chance and ended the year – he hs just ended speculation about his own future with a new four-year deal being signed.

Forster hasn’t become a bad goalkeeper overnight so I’m not convinced we should be looking to move him on but having been the established No 1 does he think his best way back to form is fresh surroundings?

Gunn spent last season with Norwich City, making 51 appearances for the Canaries and the 22-year-old impressed keeping a number of clean sheets across the campaign.

We#ll have to see if this goes anywhere.
