Southampton v Chelsea FA Cup Semi-Final

Last year Southampton were robbed in the League Cup Final by Manchester United.

Crazy as it seems both clubs are one game away from a repeat meeting in a Wembley Cup Final. United face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup in one semi-final, whilst Southampton face reigning champions Chelsea in the other.

Our chances will have been written off by the vast majority of football pundits and fans alike. Chelsea beat Saints last weekend and will really fancy their ability to beat us again. However, this is a game that is a one-off, with no second chances. Anything can happen in such a situation as any team is capable of managing a victory in a one-off game such as this semi-final.

Yes, Chelsea beat us last week but that is old history now, and we are unlikely to feel shackled by the stress of needing to earn much-needed points in our relegation fight. This is a straight fight between two teams eager to reach Wembley for the FA Cup Final. For Saints, the need to repay Antonio Conte for last week’s defeat could be the edge we feel is required.

Chelsea have a few injured players plus Marcos Alonso is out suspended after his nasty tackle on Shane Long. That game gives Saints reason enough to fight hard as they go looking for revenge for the loss. Chelsea will however have their main players back after resting them in their prior victory over Burnley. Sadly Saints don’t have that option having a much weaker squad.

So another Wembley trip and one which could leave us with a great big high or a feeling of resignation.

I know which one I dearly want to feel on Sunday.
