Southampton v Walsall Report

Walsall did a snatch and run on Southampton as the Saints snatched defeat from what could have been an overwhelming victory.

Saints battered at the Walsall goal throughout the game but failed to break through partly due to an inspired goalkeeping display from Walsall’s Jimmy Walker.

the keeper used just about every part of his body to keep the visitors at bay and was ably assisted by goal-line clearances and blocked efforts on goal.

From the first minute when Morgan Schneiderlin failed to beat the keeper and injured himself in the attempt, Saints seemed powerless to finish off any of their chances.

Whether the injury to Morgan had an impact or not we shall never know but although we continued to open up the Saddler’s defence the ball simply would not go over the line into the net.

The first half finished with the Saints pressing and as we waited for the second half to start we wondered whether the team would come out and remeber how to score.

It didn’t take long for us to learn the sad fact that things were the same. Chance after chance went begging and as the game wore on so the tide began to turn.

Walsall took confidence from our lack of a finishing touch and started to threaten themselves. So much so that when Jaidi mistimed a header Jon Macken was on hand to beat Davis and score to give the Saddlers’ the lead.

This led to increasing pressure from the Saints as they tried desperately to get back into the match. Lallana, Lambert, Jaidi and Barnard all missed chances to level and as time ran out we sensed that we were not going to break through.

The whistle blew and we had lost a game which surely as promotion hopefuls we should have won comfortably. Three points lost but now we have to head off on another trek as we look forward to our next game.

A very disappointing result but not a disastrous one other than the fact we have gained another injured player. It does seem as though injuries could now make our task more difficult.
