On Wednesday evening Southampton kept their first clean sheet in eleven Premier League games to take a point from Chelsea as we made the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The hosts dominated possession on the day as you’d expect them to, but despite their control on the game we limited their real chances on target and with a strong and organised defensive showing it will be a point that massively boosts the confidence within manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first team group – especially when allied to the victories he’s picked up since arriving as Mark Hughes replacement.

With plenty of effort on show from the players, statistics website Whoscored rated our defence in particular very highly.

22-year-old Angus Gunn took their star man rating for his performance between the sticks as he made his Premier League debut following his arrival over the summer from Manchester City, but completing the top five best performers on the day – our defence featured entirely.

Maya Yoshida (8.24) was in second spot followed by, Yan Valery (7.89), Jannik Vestergaard (7.46) and Jan Bednarek (7.10).

Every other player in the squad, substitutes included received a six-plus score for their own efforts and with Hasenhuttl calling on James Ward-Prowse to take his opportunity, the 24-year-old took sixth place in the listings.

Onto the next one now and hopefully an unbeaten run to boost confidence even further.
