Stats: Chelsea v Southampton

Southampton made the trip to Wembley Stadium to face Chelsea in our FA Cup Semi-Final earlier this afternoon.

After a goalless first half where Mark Hughes would have been pleased with our defensive play, albeit offering little to nothing in attack, Chelsea sprung to life in the second period and scored in the 46th minute to take the lead. Inside of the final ten minutes of the game, Alvaro Morata doubled their advantage and the game ended 2-0 in their favour.

Southampton did have two key opportunities across the 90 minutes, however, Nathan Redmond went close from distance and Charlie Austin did hit the woodwork but it wasn’t to be and in many ways it was the result a lot expected.

All eyes to the Premier League and our battle to avoid the drop now. The FA Cup has been a welcome distraction but we know exactly what the focus has to be moving forward to the final game of the campaign.

One for the pub quiz:

Mark Hughes becomes only the second manager to be eliminated from the FA Cup in a single season as gaffer of two sides (Stoke and Southampton).
