Manager Ronald Koeman has said that the two one defeat to Stoke City yesterday was very harsh on the Southampton players.

Audio – Stoke Loss Reactions

Speaking to saintsfc following the defeat that saw Stoke fightback from behind, Koeman rued the fact we couldn’t put the game beyond them before they got their second wind and the late winner.

‘It`s difficult to understand that we lost today because I think we played well. We played good football and were by far the better team, but it`s difficult because of the way how they play – with a lot of physicality and with long balls. They are dangerous at set-pieces and the possibility is always that they can score. It`s a different way of playing football but sometimes it`s difficult to defend against and to get the good result that we deserved today.’

Koeman went on to say that he still felt we were the better side even when they drew level at one all but we just couldn’t convert the chances we made again and it has been something we’ve struggled with in 2015 largely.

But he knows you don’t get points in this game for chances, you have to put them away and we didn’t put enough away to take all three points and the win.

‘It`s painful to lose like this, but we have to accept it. If we keep playing like today, then I think we will finish in a high position. It`s difficult because everybody`s very disappointed when you feel yourself that you were the better team on the pitch. When you have more chances and you don`t get one point, then we are very disappointed. We played to win the game but we lost it. That`s difficult to understand.’

It truly was another of those days as defender Toby Alderweireld was stretchered off with injury in the game having fallen awkwardly.

The player has picked up a shoulder injury but he was set for a full assessment some point today to determine the potential severity of it and whether he will spend time on the sidelines again but Koeman did say that initial thoughts about the problem were ‘positive’ so it’s fingers crossed time.
