Reports this week are now linking Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl with a potential interest in Belgian starlet Francis Amuzu.

Again, it’s a name that few in the Southampton fanbase will be aware of I suspect, but the 19-year-old Anderlecht prospect had a decent breakthrough campaign in the 2017/18 season, firmly establishing himself in their first team setup in the second half of the year. He built on that in 2018/19, making 38 appearances across all levels as he even got his Belgian Under 21 breakthrough and impressed at the U21 European Championships.

Outlet Het Laatste Nieuws have now linked us, as well as Brighton and Hove Albion, as having an interest in his services, along with German side Mainz.

The bizarre element of the report here is they state that basically, although he is on the shopping ‘list’, it’s not with a view to a move this summer, it’s as an option for next summer when he’s developed further and gained greater game time according to the translation I’m reading.

I’m not sure Southampton fans should put much stock in this one, as although he does seem to tick the boxes that Hasenhuttl would want from a young developing player, the impression I’m left with is that this is an agent game when it comes to contracts and game time under new manager Vincent Kompany – it seems he’s stalling on a new deal with his existing one running out in 2020, so the apparent interest from others just helps put the pressure on his parent club in negotiations.
