Saints have missed out on signing Wealdstone’s 22-year-old striker Jermaine Beckford.

Saints went to watch Beckford in action after a run of thirty-five goals in forty games in the Ryman League Premier Division this season.

The player has also recently attracted the interest of Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Watford, Charlton, Bristol City, Swindon and Leeds.

It was Leeds who have completed a deal for the young prospect; signing him for an undisclosed fee which, due to the large amount of interest, is believed to be quite high for a player unproven in league football.

Saints boss George Burley:

‘He was a young striker we had watched.

‘We spoke to Wealdstone but that’s as far as it went.

‘There was an interest but the figure the club were asking for virtually doubled overnight.

‘We were aware of the boy and we did make an offer, but he’s gone to Leeds.’

The last non league player Saints signed was in 1998, when Mark Paul joined from Kings Lynn. He failed to make a first team appearance for Saints, eventually returning to semi professional football. So maybe it’s not such a bad thing we missed out on another non league prospect this time!
