Summer Signing Needs To Find The Next Gear For Southampton

With plenty of disappointment for Southampton fans following Monday evening’s capitulation against Brighton and Hove Albion, despite holding a two-goal advantage as we went into the final 25 minutes.

Brighton, of course, levelled matters up with a second comeback goal in stoppage-time and with plenty of fingers to point at players who stepped off and began performing like the game was over and won, £18million signing Jannik Vestergaard came in for criticism of his own.

I think it’s fair to say that most will agree he’s still adjusting to life at the club, let alone the country, but the 26-year-old former Borussia Monchengladbach player certainly doesn’t seem to be helping himself as some feel he’s too relaxed at the back and he needs to focus and sharpen up so he wins more of his one on one battles.

Losing a two-goal advantage, eyes will always go to the defence and Wesley Hoedt has long had critics of his own with Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek in particular on the bench or out of the side, but does seem to need a confidence shot – but so do a number of them.
