The absence of influential defender Michael Svensson has been pinpointed by many fans as one of the main reasons for Southampton’s relegation from the Premiership in the 2004/2005 season.
So, it will come as a huge relief to fans that Svensson has signed a contract extension until 2007.
The 30 year old defender is now nearing the end of his rehabilitation from a recurring knee injury and is looking forward to next season.
Svensson told the club’s official website: –
‘I’m very grateful to the chairman and the manager to have been given this chance.’
‘The chairman has been really good to me – when you have been injured for as long as I have you are not expecting anything, so to have signed an extension was a huge relief. ‘
‘It’s a year as well which is really good and hopefully next year I can repay them.’
Saints fans will be hoping that Svensson will be able to discover his fine form of recent years and lead Saints back to the Premiership next season.
