Sean Morrison’s ninth minute goal ensured the Saints remain on -9 and without a league win after three games.
The home side dominated the game, and ran out worthy winners after making the former Premier League side look average.
The Robins had some early luck with their wingers Anthony McNamee and Jon-Paul McGovern causing Southampton full backs Lloyd James and Dan Harding trouble from the first whistle.
Saints boss Alan Pardew was furious when once again his side conceded from a set-piece.
On the ninth minute, the Robins took the lead when McNamee’s inch perfect cross was met by Morrison’s powerful header to put the home side 1-0 up.
The home side should have made it two, when McNamee superbly found centre forward Billy Paytner, but the striker’s header was finely saved by Saints keeper Kelvin Davis.
In the second half the Saints continued to show they looked vulnerable from set-pieces, and on the 61st minute, the Robins nearly doubled their league.
McGovern once again delivered a great corner, which was met by Jonathan Douglas, but Lloyd James was able to clear off the line.
The Saints had a late surge, with Rickie Lambert coming close with two free kicks.
A late substitution saw Gregorz Rasiak replace centre back Oliver Lancashire to give the 3,000 travelling supporters some optimism.
And the late attack saw Adam Lallana come close, but it was too little too late, and once again the Saints were outplayed at this level.
