Young defender Matt Targett has said that victory against Manchester United last weekend at Old Trafford was certainly the stuff that dreams are made from for players and it was a win that will stay with him forever.

Speaking to saintsfc as the players return to training on yet another high following new signing Charlie Austin’s debut goal as a substitute giving us back to back Old Trafford wins in the last two years, a delighted 20 year old explained.

‘It was a very special moment. It’s not often that a Southampton team goes to Old Trafford and wins, so it was great to be a part of it. We knew that they weren’t in the best of form, they’re struggling to score goals, and our job was to frustrate them and try to nick one late, and Charlie Austin came on and he did that.’

Having got the whole 90 minutes under his belt, the Academy graduate went on to say.

‘I think being a local lad you always want your team to do well, and going to a place like Old Trafford and bringing home three points is a special memory that I will remember forever.’

Having played left wing back in the last three Premier League games – playing his part in three clean sheets – Targett went on to say that following the December dip, confidence was again high and largely Southampton had just got back to doing the basics well in games, so the aim now is to finish strongly and try and give ourselves another European adventure for next season.

‘It’s great to get a late goal. It gives us the confidence that we can go anywhere and win. I think it’s put us right back on track for where we want to be. I think we’re only looking ahead now, so hopefully we can qualify for the Europa League again.’
