Southampton legend Rickie Lambert has backed one of our Academy graduates to really make a mark for new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl now we are in the second half of the season, and he believes when back fully fit, striker Michael Obafemi will begin to take the Premier League by storm.

Speaking to the Daily Echo recently to discuss a few things at St Mary’s Stadium, 18-year-old Obafemi had clearly made an impression on Lambert.

Having shot to prominence this season with two senior starts and five substitute showings, he true debut goal came in his last match ahead of the turn of the year as he found the net as we took victory over Huddersfield Town.

Having also been capped by the Republic of Ireland as he made his international debut, it’s unfortunate timing to see him ruled out with an injury since mid December, but he is back in training and there are high hopes for him in the months ahead.

Lambert explained.

“It’s good to see they’re getting back to bringing in youngsters as that’s what Southampton’s renowned for. I know they’ve got a young lad Michael Obafemi, who can terrify a few defenders from the little glimpses I’ve seen.”

Let’s hope Lambert is right as if Obafemi develops into half the player Lambert was, we’ll be laughing.
