With Southampton currently lying in 17th in the Premier League table, the days of playing against Inter Milan at the San Siro now seem like a million year away.
3 years ago, 8,000 odd #saintsfc fans singing their out away to Inter Milan. Not many are able to say they’ve seen their team at the legendary San Siro, an occasion that will stay with me for the rest of my life, never been prouder to be a Saint than on that day #awaydays pic.twitter.com/AB47TgTLq3

The Saints were drawn with the Serie A giants in the 2016/17 Europa League group stages, meaning that the south coast side had to make the trek to Italy and face Inter in the legendary San Siro stadium, something that plenty of supporters on social media still remember fondly three years on.
Although Southampton would lose that particular game 1-0, with a 10-man Inter side featuring the likes of Mauro Icardi, Samir Handanovic and Ivan Perisic, the return fixture at St. Mary’s proved to be a more positive fixture for the Saints, as Virgil van Dijk and a Yuto Nagatomo own-goal secured three points for the south coast side in a 2-1 win.
Here’s what some Southampton fans had to say on Twitter about the away trip to Inter Milan…
Amazing few days in Milan..match day down by the canal was hilarious. To see us walk out at the San Siro was something that’ll stay with me forever

Great day out and we were the most unlucky team ever to loose

Was an amazing experience we didn’t deserve to lose. Compare that night to yesterday’s game at Wolves and you realise how things have changed for the worse so quickly. Still that’s the life of a Saints fan #saintsfc

The venture to the San Siro left a good impression on the supporters who made the trek to northern Italy…

Three years ago. Oh man. I just remember driving all the way there, parking up, watching the game and going back to my car which had been broken into…drove 16 hours home without a window! #Chilly

Amazing trip despite the result. As soon as the draw was made I knew I just had to be there for a a once in a lifetime trip to the San Siro. Even though I did get tricked into buying an non alcoholic beer in the ground for €9

The 2-1 win wasn’t enough for Southampton to progress to the next round of the Europa League, as the Saints crashed out on head-to-head record.
