Late yesterday evening Southampton confirmed that Academy graduate Yan Valery had now signed a new long term contract at St Mary’s Stadium.
The 20-year-old’s rise under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has become electric in many ways and whilst clearly highly rated, the lad still has plenty of development left to do but with plenty of darker times in recent seasons, seeing us turn back to youth and seeing our youth progress and impress has again been a highlight.

Having become a first team regular in 2018/19, as well as scoring twice – his stunner against Manchester United and our leveller against Spurs – he’s now put pen to paper on a deal until 2023.
Speaking to saintsfc our Austrian gaffer said of his rise.
“Yan’s development has been fantastic in the last few months. I think he is a player who embodies precisely the philosophy of Southampton, as he is young and forward-thinking. He has been given trust by us, and in return he has shown exactly what we want to see, which is a brave player who believes in himself and is willing to work on his deficits to get better. Already you can see Yan has improved defensively, and his goals against teams like Manchester United and Tottenham are big signs of how much his confidence has been growing. Players like Yan are the future of Southampton Football Club, not just the present, so I am very pleased for him and for us that he has signed this new contract.”
Fantastic approach from Hasenhuttl, praise but ground in improvement and it should also send a renewed and refreshed message to our youngsters that the pathway is finally back open!
