New Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl took charge of his first proper game at the club as we faced Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.

With plenty of effort on display, the same old problems for Southampton came to the fore as we lost 1-0 to a late goal from the hosts at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Despite having the possession and only one effort’s difference in attempts on goal, Cardiff tested Alex McCarthy on four occasions and we could only muster one effort on target across the 90 minutes.

Speaking to Sky Sports as he met with the media following the game, our Austrian gaffer did find positives from the performance that he wanted to build on, but equally he saw the ‘horrible mistakes’ that we made against them that ultimately allowed them to take victory.

“We start working hard now. I’ve seen a few good things from my team but also in the last period we made too many horrible mistakes today. It’s a pity we dropped points. I saw the guys sitting in the dressing room with their heads down and I told them I understand they’re frustrated, but it’s all about work and staying together. Now we must make the next step in our development.”

Given the lack of confidence within the squad, few would’ve expected Hasenhuttl to wave a magic wand and have an immediate effect as this is going to take time as it is our worst run in 20 years, and we are winless in 14 matches now.

We have to hope he can build on those positives that he saw and quickly and get the players to improve on the mistakes he saw but at least he seems to be calling a spade a spade rather than looking into the cosmos for excuses.
