Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has already come in for plenty of praise for his first-half showing in particular as Southampton opened the 2018/19 Premier League season with a scoreless draw against Burnley.

Burnley were the sharper given their earlier competitive start to the year in the Europa League, and McCarthy largely kept us in the game early doors with some fantastic stops once again pulled off by the 28-year-old.

Given the form he finished 2017/18 in, it’s certainly good to see him start this year in the same vein as with increased optimism this year after previous disappointments, McCarthy could be key to us having a far more enjoyable season.

McCarthy took to social media following the game to express his delight at keeping a clean sheet at the first time of asking and some fans were incredibly quick to lavish praise back in his direction for his own individual showing on the day.

Let’s hope he can find his consistency from last season and if those in front of him have a better year it could be an interesting nine months.
