A win for Southampton last night ensured the Saints escaped from the relegation zone for the first time in what feels like an eternity, and there was an unlikely scorer on the night.

Ryan Bertrand made it 2-0 to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side 43 minutes in, tapping in Shane Long’s flicked header from close range to double Southampton’s lead heading into the break and to ultimately score the decisive goal that would secure the Saints the three points.
Bertrand’s first goal since 2018 was an unlikely occurrence, yet one that supporters on social media were buzzed about given the left-back’s so far problematic season that saw the England international dropped from the side at the start of the year and then sent off in Southampton’s 9-0 loss to Leicester City.
Here’s what some Southampton fans had to say about Bertrand’s unlikely heroics on Twitter…
he broke the Ward-Prowse/Ings scoring chain. Unbelievable.

The win last night ensured that Southampton climbed out of the relegation zone following Liverpool’s 5-2 win against Everton, who replaced the Saints in 18th place in the table.
