Having been less than a bit-part player in reality under former manager Mark Hughes, Poland international Jan Bednarek is certainly one Southampton player who has received a second lease of life at the club and it was well applauded by most fans, as given defensive displays under the last gaffer, plenty of fans couldn’t work out why the 23-year-old was being overlooked.
Now a regular for Austrian Ralph Hasenhuttl, like a number of Southampton players so far in the campaign of 2019/20, Bednarek’s own form has been mixed, with some performances naturally being better than others, but statistics website Whoscored took to social media with an interesting comment this week and it certainly sparked a reaction from the fans.
Jan Bednarek: Has committed more errors leading to an opposition goal (3) than any other outfield player in Europe's top five leagues this season

Whilst some fans were happy to point out that it shows how much improvement he needs to make this year, others were more forgiving, feeling he was the least of our problems (albeit not perfect) given the changes we’ve seen in the backline and they felt it was a reflection on a lack of consistency and understanding.
Agree wholeheartedly – still gets caught on his heels, and needs to have somebody next to him to learn from. Feel like he’s being made into a proper senior pro too soon out of necessity. Maya needs to focus on his own game 100% to be effective, not a backline leader. #SaintsFC https://t.co/5sZcyUgx0F

Probably doesn’t help that he’s been utterly exposed by a ‘defence’ made up of players out of position #saintsfc

Think he had a tough end to last season/start to this, but not necessarily surprising when the CB line-up (and overall formations) keep changing most weeks – alongside the fact that our midfield largely offer zero protection. He needs to become more consistent again.
