Virgil van Dijk has escalated his desire to leave St Mary’s this summer and has now handed in a transfer request.

Van Dijk appeared to want his cake and eat it in terms of not limiting the pot of money he would make personally with a transfer switch, but instead of sulking he’s finally made his move.

The BBC report that van Dijk has made his preference Liverpool and the 26 year old has said he’s handed the request in because nasty Southampton were about to fine him two weeks wages having made himself unavailable for us during pre season so far.

It must be said, his statement partially disputes that particular claim.

‘I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist. I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.’

He added.

‘I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours.’

If it’s such a short career why sign a long term deal Virgil?

He went on to add.

‘I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances. I would also like to make clear that I have never once refused to train.’

But have you refused to play or is your mindset better now?

Better hope Liverpool stump up the cash hadn’t you.
