Yesterday evening Southampton confirmed that Virgil van Dijk would make the switch to Liverpool from Southampton when the January transfer window opens.

With all the shenanigans over the summer where Southampton dug their heels in over Liverpool’s behaviour and failure to meet our valuation of the player, during negotiations this month they have reportedly coughed up the £70million we were asking for, although the clubs’ official statement confirms simply that the fee is a new world record for a defender.

The deal will be confirmed and official on January 1, 2018.

Press speculation implies the deal could be worth £75million in total and it beats by some way the £52million Manchester City paid to Monaco for Benjamin Mendy last July.

The BBC carry a statement from van Dijk.

‘I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton. I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club.’

At least the next week and part of January won’t be dominated with the deal going through quietly and quickly.
