There was some loose speculation last summer suggesting that Aston Villa were interested in securing the services of Southampton left back Matt Targett, although the stronger links were on a return to former loan club Fulham with bids actually rejected by the club.

“I’m Fine With It” “No Wonder The Last One Was Rejected” – Some Southampton Fans React To Second Fulham Bid

Although nothing came of that, or interest in January, the Sun have claimed recently that Villa will return for him this summer as head coach Dean Smith has made him their first choice when it comes to adding competition in the fullback spots at the club.

They rate Targett as being worth £10million but if the Academy graduate is to depart, fans will certainly be hoping it’s for more than that given the reported Fulham bids. And in any event, most continue to see him as the natural successor to Ryan Bertrand so they won’t welcome the return of the interest in anyway.

The Sun’s report does lack any real concrete details and in short it just seems to be based on Fulham being relegated, but Villa being promoted more than anything but I can imagine this one will become a regular piece of speculation again.
