Manager Ronald Koeman has been tasked again with questions surrounding the future of Dejan Lovren, and in the interview he commented that he felt Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar would be a good replacement should the Croatian leave.

Speaking to the press again about Lovren’s public behaviour the other week, the gaffer said.

‘A player shouldn’t say something like that, it’s not very proper. We just have to wait how it develops. For now, Dejan can still play with us. I don’t want to lose him but, if he leaves, he will only go for a top price.’

Asked the questions about replacements, and you would presume it was a led question following Vlaar’s and Holland’s performance at the World Cup this summer, Koeman added.

‘Ron would definitely be an option, although I think he won’t be cheap right now. Well, let’s just wait and see.’

Vlaar has certainly taken the headlines this summer, and he won a lot of praise for his performances at the struggling Midlands side last season after a tough first year that saw him spend a fair time out injured following his arrival.

If we are holding out for £25million for Lovren, the Dutchman only has one year left on his contract, so I’d imagine we’d come out of any prospective deal there with some change.
