Weekend fightback shows Saints have what it takes to end 230 day-long inconsistent run – Opinion

|

When Ismaila Sarr put Watford ahead in the first half against Southampton, it seemed like the Saints were yet again about to suffer a disappointing collapse, but then Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side did the unexpected.

With 12 minutes to go and the score still at 1-0 to the Hornets, Moussa Djenepo expertly assisted Danny Ings who managed to bring the score to 1-1, and five minutes later, James Ward-Prowse hit a stunner of a free-kick to secure the three points for Southampton and to seal the club’s first win in over two months.

Will Southampton's season kick-off from here?

Absolutely

No way, we need major improvements

The fightback was nothing short of unexpected and sensational, with the result now putting Southampton two points shy of escaping the relegation zone as the Premier League table shows, and the Saints next fixture could well see the south coast team escape the dreaded bottom three.

19th place Norwich City will be the next side Southampton face off against in the Premier League, and the fightback mentality exhibited against Watford will be something the Saints have to maintain again at St. Mary’s on Wednesday night.

Indeed, it has been 230 days since Southampton last won back-to-back Premier League games as reported by The Southern Daily Echo, a run of inconsistency that has seemingly doomed Hasenhuttl’s side to the pits of the league table in recent months, yet Saturday showed that the Saints have got the spark in them to fight back.

Three points against Norwich, who drew against Arsenal this weekend, will be yet another massive step forward for Southampton in their quest to escape the Premier League bottom three, and their second-wind showing against Watford on Saturday will be something the coaching staff and supporters will hope carries on into their midweek clash against the Canaries.

The festive period will be a massively important time of the season for Southampton, and three points against Norwich will be the perfect way to get the ball rolling.
