Former Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez has completed his return to Burnley, which in turn could mean Charlie Austin is one step closer to leaving St Mary’s.

West Brom sold Rodriguez for £10million and could now look to replace him with Austin.

The Saints forward along with four team-mates was left at home for this week’s pre-season trip to Austria, with the belief those players would be available to finalise transfers away from the club.

Austin has attracted interest from Aston Villa and Sheffield United but as yet neither club has made an official bid.

The Sun recently reported that West Brom were also interested in the 30-year-old forward. And he is valued by Saints at £10million, the same price they received for Rodriguez.

The arrival of Che Adams to St Mary’s is likely to mean Austin would find himself even further down the pecking order and may wish to leave to seek more first-team opportunities.

Austin did not have a great campaign last season and only scored two league goals in 25 matches. He has one year remaining on his contract, so it would make sense to sell him this summer and he is valued at £7.2million by Transfermarkt.
