Saints’ boss Mark Wotte is relieved that his star players have stayed at St Mary’s.

A few players, namely Andrew Surman and Adam Lallana were rumoured to exit the Hampshire side to ease the financial problems of the club.

Instead, Wotte managed to bolster the defence with Dutch centre back Jan-Paul Saeijs and former Hungarian Under-21 international, Zoltan Liptak.

Wotte explained his relief in keeping his players. “We didn’t lose one player in the transfer window and that was a big thing for us because everyone was expecting that to happen,” said Wotte.

“I am happy that the board did not negotiate with the clubs who made low offers for Andrew Surman or other players and I think we have to give credit to the board at the moment.

“It would have been very easy for them to sell a player because of the finances, but we also brought in Jan-Paul Saeijs who is doing a good job and Zoltan Liptak who has made a good first impression – so let’s be positive.”
