Left-back Bale, 17, is a target for a host of top clubs with Southampton this week having rejected a bid – thought to be for £8million from Manchester United – for the talented Wales international.

Saints boss George Burley is determined to hold onto his prized asset at least until the summer, and Wright also has his fingers crossed the club hold their nerve throughout the rest of January.

‘There’s not a left-back in the country coming through like him,’ said Wright. ‘He’s hot property and if he was going to be sold I think there would be an auction.’

‘Whatever he does is up to him. The speculation seems to change every day but as far as I’m concerned he’s still a Southampton player.’

‘He’s here at the moment and we are all happy to have him here.’
