There is no doubt in my mind that Southampton is good enough to make the top two
Birmingham City crashed to a 3-1 home defeat last night against struggling Southend United; this means that a win for Southampton tonight against Sheffield Wednesday will lift Saints to only one point behind second place.
Of course Birmingham do have two games in hand following two postponements earlier on this month, but as last night proved, the Blues are not unbeatable.
Southampton have only lost 6 times this season, which is after last night the best record in the division, Saints main problem lies in the fact that they draw to much. The annoying thing is that most of those draws Saints have been in winning positions before throwing it away. For example when saints Played tonight`s opponents Sheffield Wednesday earlier on this season at Hillsborough, Southampton somehow managed to chuck away a 2-0 lead and then a 3-1 lead to only end up with a 3-3 draw.
There is no doubt in my mind that Southampton is good enough to make the top two, at the moment Saints are on a run of only two defeats in there last 17 fixtures (in all competitions) and one of those losses was away at premiership Manchester City.
Well at time of writing Southampton have only added one new player to the squad and that is 28 year old Polish international Marek Saganowski. For many Saints fans, including me, it has been somewhat of a disappointment that the Board haven`t seen fit to release more funds to strengthen the team. But in there defence we did spend big in the summer.
But now with players like Rudi Skacel and Nathan Dyer returning to first team action I don`t see why Saints can`t go on a top two push.
So to answer the title question, yes I think the ambitions are realistic, I have seen enough from our current squad for it to (in my opinion) be able to make the top two. Birmingham City are not unbeatable as we ourselves proved when we beat them at St Mary`s earlier on this season, and in all honesty I do think Derby County are playing a bit above themselves at the moment and at some point they will fall away.
Of course 3 points in tonight`s game against Sheffield Wednesday are obviously vital, the win would make a four point gap on the team in 7th outside the playoff places and close the gap on second to one point.
