Saints gaffer George Burley believes that if Southampton were more ruthless in front of goal then they would have picked up more points.

He told the Echo: ‘It’s football. It’s a test of character and, with ten games left, there’s still everything to play for.

‘We are still positive and we need to keep playing in the manner we did in the first half on Monday night.

‘There have been two or three games in which we’ve maybe needed to be more ruthless in front of goal.

‘Against Derby, West Brom and Preston, who are big teams above us, if we were a wee bit more ruthless, we would have won those games convincingly.’

  • Burley if we conceded less we wouldn’t need to score more goals! We’ve conceded 9 goals in 6 matches, improve in that area and winning will be a whole lot easier.
