Kelvin Davis said securing promotion today has put an end to a nervy few weeks for the players.

Speaking to saintsfc following the Coventry win, our club captain said said.

‘It’s been a long two or three weeks. I’ve felt like we’ve almost been there and not quite made it over the line but, if you know your Saints history, that’s how it’s meant to be done here. It’s great to finally get that final game in. I’ve been waking up every morning with it being the first thing in my mind right until last thing at night and all through the day. I’ve been a horrible bloke to live with.’

Promotion obviously gives Davis a second bite at the Premiership cherry after his spell with Sunderland, and he’s convinced the Saints can be a surprise package next season.

‘I was always disappointed with how my season went with Sunderland, but I felt a club like Southampton would have every chance to kick on once it got back in there. There’s an ethos within the dressing room that every player adheres to, and I believe that’s why we’ve done as well as we have.’
