Dyer content with life at Swansea

Swansea’s on-loan winger, Nathan Dyer, has spoken of his desire to secure a permanent switch to the Liberty Stadium.

Dyer has even taken a swipe at his parent club, Southampton, amid speculation in the national press suggesting that Saints’ Head Coach, Mark Wotte, wants Dyer to make an early return to St Mary’s.

The 21-year-old, speaking to thisissouthwales.co.uk, has made no secret of how he is enjoying life in Wales. He said, “Swansea is a really good club and I have not had many chances at Southampton. I think I have fitted in well down here. The lads have mad it easy for me to settle and I’m enjoying myself.”

Some Southampton fans have found the decision to let Dyer leave on loan somewhat confusing, especially with Saints struggling to create opportunities in the final third. With a large majority of Saints’ fans seeing Dyer as an ideal solution to the right-wing position, news of his treatment by the Southampton management isn’t likely to bode well with the St Mary’s faithful.

“When I came back from Sheffield United, I was basically told that I would have to work really hard to get into the team. They said I’d be third of fourth choice, so I jumped at the chance to come to Swansea.”

Despite the fact that Dyer signed a new 3-year-deal at the beginning of the season, an agreement was in place with Sheffield United that they could sign Dyer should his loan spell prove to be a success. However, when things didn’t work out for him, Saints were quick to send the Trowbridge-born star out on loan once again, with Swansea being the latest beneficiaries. With that in mind, it was understandable that Dyer was less than impressed after hearing that Wotte wanted him to make a premature return to St Mary’s.

“I spoke to Wotte before I signed the new Southampton deal and I worked with him a few times in the reserves. Now he is the manager he wants to keep me but you could say it’s a bit unfair that I’m doing well at the moment and now they want me back.”

With Dyer having been victorious in all 6 Swansea appearances he has made to date, there’s no wonder that the Welsh side are keen to tie him down to a long-term contract.

Following a string of impressive performances, Saints’ Head Coach has been full of praise for the youngster, stating that he believes he could go on to become as good as Aaron Lennon or Theo Walcott; something that the young winger is quick to play down.

“I just want to be as good as Nathan Dyer can be. I want to play my own game because when you start making comparisons, you start putting pressure on.”

Dyer hasn’t ruled out returning to St Mary’s at the end of the season, but judging by his comments, it’s clear that he sees his long-term future at the Liberty Stadium with Swansea.
