Saints’ skipper Jose Fonte has today signed a contract extension that will see his existing deal carry through until the year 2018.

Having joined the Saints in January 2010, Fonte has played an integral part in the clubs rise from League 1 to the Premier League, finding his own personal successes along the way as well as with the club.

This included picking up his first full international cap for his country, Portugal, and he has been regularly called up to the national squad since.

Speaking to the Official Saintsfc website the 31 year old had this to say:

“I am extremely happy that they are giving me this opportunity to keep being in this great club, and I hope I can give back with good performances and by helping the club move forward.”

He continued: “This is where I feel happy and where I`ve been very successful, so this is where I want to be and where I want to win.”

Manager Ronald Koeman also spoke of his happiness with the deal, saying that Jose sets a tremendous example for the younger players. Koeman continued by expressing his views on Fonte’s future, suggesting that he could go on to become a club legend as well as lifting silverware for the club soon.

Fonte will lead Saints into tomorrow’s home match against Leicester City as the side look to win three points in the first game since the international break.
