Gorre’s verdict

The Reserves slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace at Staplewood, but Dean Gorre insisted that there were some positives to take from the game.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Gorre said, “I told the players afterwards that this is still a learning process and this showed that there are things that we need to get out of our game.

“When we look back at it though we will see how well we moved the ball around as a team and how we created chances, but we will also see that we gave away some easy goals,” the Dutchman explained.

“We are disappointed with 3-1 because I think we deserved better than that. In the first half we should have scored because we created quite a few opportunities but in the end it was about the chances that we gave away and not about the ones that we didn’t take,” he continued.

“We played some good football in the first half but we still didn’t use the ball well enough, however, when we did keep the ball we did create chances. The timing of the second goal saw a couple of heads drop but we came back well.”

The visitors took the lead through the experienced Jamie Scowcroft, and the Palace striker is someone that Gorre knows all too well, having played and scored against him in a defeat 9 years ago.

“We knew that they would be physical, but they were direct too and they had players like Jamie Scowcroft who has been in the game for a long time,” Gorre said.

Ryan Smith played the full 90 minutes in a more advanced role than what he is used to, but the youngster impressed and was unfortunate not to get himself on the scoresheet.

“We know that we have to work with him a little bit but we think that he’s got a big future and he knows that he can do it,” Gorre commented. “I believe that we will get the best out of him and tonight he has shown that he can play as a forward as well.”

The First Team Assistant Coach also spoke about trialist Ronayne Marsh-Brown, saying that the player’s future will be decided in the next few days.

“He has done OK in a couple of games and I quite like him. We will be making a decision on him soon.”
