Jos Hooiveld has said he feels like he has proven the doubters wrong after working hard to get back in the team, and he feels he was unfaily the scapegoat for our early defensive issues.

Speaking to the Daily Echo Hooiveld explained that he felt unfairly criticised earlier in the season, which ultimately led to him being dropped for a period, and whilst that’s arguable, it’s well known that a lot of goals came from a Hooiveld moment, whether it was a penalty, an own goal or whatever so whilst it’s possible to agree taking the headlines distorted things somewhat, it wouldn’t be right to say it was all unfair.

‘I like to prove people wrong. If you look at my career I’ve proven people wrong everywhere I have been. Celtic, and then in Copenhagen when they didn’t want me. At the end of the day, I am standing there with a smile on my face and that’s football. If you’ve ging to look at all my games, it was not that poor. People were saying it was poor, it was bad and they had to blame someone. Oh, and that’s me.’

Hooiveld says it’s not a case of him being awful back then and now suddenly amazing, it’s just the nature of the game and form and confidence related, as well as obviously adjusting to the differences in this league following promotion.

Hooiveld also spoke of praise for Artur Boruc and his performances, saying that he hopes the club can agree a new deal with him over the summer.

‘They don’t call him the ‘Holy Goalie’ for nothing.’
