22 year old centre half Aaron Martin has dropped back down a division to gain additional experience and will move to Crystal Palace for next season.

After making 17 appearances last term for Nigel Adkins, the decision has been taken to allow the youngster to get a proper run in Palace’s first team so he can increase his experience for a shot at the Premiership in the future.

Speaking to saintsfc the manager said of the move.

‘This will be a great move for Aaron in terms of his development at Southampton. He has done ever so well for us so far, but he needs to be playing on a regular basis to continue to develop. He has a long term contract here and we see a bright future for him, but he needs to be playing regularly and he will get that at Crystal Palace. They play good football, and it will be a fantastic environment for him to continue to improve in.’

Martin himself sees the positives in the move, but he adds he will be keeping one eye on Southampton’s progress in the top flight.

‘I’ll still be talking to a lot of the boys and watching them everyweek on Match of the Day. I’ve spoken to the gaffer, and I know I need to play a lot of games this season to get the experience to show I will be good enough to play in the Premier League. It’s a good step.’
