Former Saints boss Dave Merrington has described the prospect of the club’s parent company entering administration as ‘tragic for the fans’.

Merrington, who was in charge at The Dell during the 1995/96 season, admitted that he was ‘not that shocked’ by this morning’s news from the Stock Exchange.

Speaking to The Daily Echo, he said, “It all stems from relegation in 2005 and since then things have gone from bad to worse.

“They have had different boards and they have ended up blaming each other. It’s tragic for the fans – it’s the fans I feel sorry for.

“And you just wonder what effect it will have on the players before such an important game this weekend?’

Merrington finished by saying, “The fans have just got to get behind the players and give them as much support as possible.”

With speculation in the media that Saints could avoid a 10-point deduction by the parent company going into administration, rather than the club itself, there is still hope that Mark Wotte can guide his side to Championship saftey.
