Executive Director Les Reed has said that Southampton are ‘closing in’ on their preferred target for our new manager.

The Daily Echo are carrying quotes from Reed who explains that the club are extremely close now to hopefully making an appointment to replace the departed Mauricio Pochettino.

‘We’re closing in now on our preferred candidate, things going well. What takes time on these things is the paperwork, but I’m hoping that we can get that sorted very quickly and the fans will be excited about an announcement coming up sooner rather than later.’

The paper says that the club have felt they were in a position to make an appointment for some time now, and it’s expected that this will take place late this week or early next week, to give the new manager time to bed in ahead of the new campaign, identify targets and obviously make a decision on the players often linked with a move away from the club this summer.

The favoured candidate remains Ronald Koeman who left his post as manager of Dutch side Feyenoord earlier this summer, after three successful years with them, and apparently upon meeting the former international defender, the club were left very impressed with his ideas and the direction that 51 year old would like to take us in.

Despite being the favourite though, it’s said we have four managers on our shortlist for the job, and having been through due diligence on those who applied for the position and those we took an interest in, all four of those who made the shortlist were already potential targets ahead of the retirement of our former gaffer.

All eyes on the end of the week then.

As an aside, Reed also confirmed that Southampton expected to announce to ‘marquee’ friendlies for the pre season campaign, one away from home and the other at St Mary’s.
