Ricardo Fuller has today joined Championship rivals Stoke for an undisclosed fee. He will meet up with his former team mate Danny Higginbotham who signed on at the Brittania Stadium earlier this summer.

The move comes as a surprise and will leave Saints with only Gregorz Rasiak, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Kenwyne Jones as recognised first choice strikers. Although the trio are supplemented by youngsters David McGoldrick and Leon Best they younger players have not yet been deemed ready for first team action.

George Burley spoke to the official site about Fuller:

‘There were a number of scenarios that came in to play and in the end we felt that this move was in everybody’s best interest.

‘Ricardo was one of the bigger earners at the Club but at the moment there are probably three strikers ahead of him in the pecking order.’

The move will come as a shock to most fans who were keen for Fuller to stay after his fine form at the end of last season.

Surely Burley has a surprise or two lined up for deadline day?
