Southampton Face Sheffield Wednesday in mid week in a fixture that Saints haven`t lost in nearly 10 years.

Southampton have a fantastic recent record over Sheffield Wednesday and in fact haven`t lost to them since April 1998, they have played them 8 times. Saints will be looking to extend that great record this Wednesday at St Mary`s.

This is the first of two massive home games in 1 week which could effectively shape if Saints will be able to make the top 2 automatic promotion places or have to make do with the lottery that is the Playoffs.

Vital Quotes:

George Burley –
‘We’ve got to reproduce our home form as our home form this season has been excellent.

‘We’ve got two home games coming up and got to concentrate to get the six points.

‘We’ve lost one game in 15 in the league, our home form’s been good, so we’re in there.

‘We’ve had a little problem scoring goals at home and that’s something we’ve got to take on board and try and change.

Southampton Team News:

Michael Svensson, Djmel Balmadi and Andrew Surman are all still out with long term injuries. But Rudi Skacel and Nathen Dyer could return. Inigo Idakez is doubtful.

Player to watch: Kenwyne Jones

With top score Gregorz Rasiak finding most of his 19 goals away from home it might be up to Jones to find the net at home agaisnt Sheffield Wednesday. He did get a goal during saints 3-1 defeat at Premiership side Manchester City so hopefully that will give hime some much needed confidence

Sheffield Wed Team News:

Madjid Bougherra, Richard Wood and John Hills are all expected to fit and ready to return to action for this game

Player to watch: Chris Brunt

He has already got 9 goals so far this season from 25 apperances, without a doubt hes wednesdays biggest threat.

Match Facts & Stats

History

Back on the 23rd of December 2006 Southampton faced Wednesday at Hillsborough, the game turned out to be a thriller finishing 3-3. But Saints were left gutted that they didn`t win the game after twice having a 2 goal lead, Rasiak and Jones had made it 2-0 to Southampton within 25 minutes before Whelen pulled one back. Bradly Wright Phillips made it 3-1 and it was all looking good for the away side. But a second goal from Whelen and then a 90th minute equaliser from Sheffield Wednesday goal keeper Mark Crossley made it 3-3.
