He knows that the players were below par on Saturday but he is sure that his players can produce the results that are needed in the coming weeks.

Talking on the Saints OS he said that he is trying to instill the principles for his philosophy of open fast playing football.

‘We have to get the ball, pass it and move it. You can talk about what formations you want, we changed the shape second half to go very attack minded.’

With two wingers, Rickie up front and Guly and Lallana given licence to attack it showed intent though nothing came of it.

Nigel felt that a front five like that should have been able to pick holes in any defence but the team as a whole had an off day.

Dany N’Guessan was picked out though with special praise. Dany played his first full game in front the St Mary’s crowd and nigel appeared pleased with him.

Rochdale on Saturday will hopefully show the team in a better mettle and the team will play with more fire and urgency.
