With Southampton’s well known chase for young Birmingham City striker Che Adams seeming to stall over the transfer fee, the club have now been linked with Nigerian international striker David Okereke as a potential alternative option.
With it said that Birmingham are holding out for at least £20million this summer, yet Southampton don’t seem to want to go above our reported bid of £14million, both sides obviously remain apart in their valuations and this has led to a claim from The Sun this week that has suggested we have now moved on from Adams to 21-year-old Okereke who plys his trade for Italian side Spezia.
It’s a strange report in many ways as they instantly value the Serie B striker as being worth £15million. Okay, he had a decent 2018/19 campaign for the club scoring ten times and contributing 12 assists in 33 matches and although he earned his maiden international call, he hasn’t made their Africa Cup of Nations squad and he’s yet to debut above Under 23 level.
His star seems to be rising and he’s been linked with a few clubs, but given the difference in levels I’m not alone in wondering why we don’t just edge up our offer for Adams and leave Okereke as backup, so he can have time to adjust if our interest in him is genuine.
What’s weird is we are willing to spend £15 million on Okereke but not on Che Adams? So surely Birmingham are looking at more than the 16 million quoted ???? sounds like they wanted more like 20 million? #saintsfc

Struggling to understand why we are preparing a bid for David Okereke? He's young and promising yes, however so is Michael Obafemi – and he won't cos the £15 million. We need a PROVEN, PROLIFIC STRIKER not a young, promising striker like the one we already have. #saintsfc

Apparently we are asking £10m for Charlie Adams, IF we get close to that we should offer more for Che Adams. #SaintsFC

Fun fact: 98% of those who don't want Okereke at #saintsfc have never seen him play a match. 75% of those who consider Che Adams a 'must buy' only started paying attention to the guy in January.
There's a long way to go in this window. Trust the Hutch, keep an open mind.

Big gamble for a young Serie B player, how much are they asking?
