Nigel Adkins has admitted he is slightly disappointed with the outcome of the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup as he wanted Saints to win it, but overall it was a good pre season test.

Speaking to saintsfc following the tournament, the gaffer said.

‘We would have liked to have won the tournament, when we were 1-0 up against Arsenal you started to wonder if we could get the second and won it, because that’s how fine the margins were. But you take a hell of a lot out of it. We’re two weeks into pre season and we played a very good Anderlecht side, there’s a lot we can learn from it.’

Adkins also admitted he was delighted with the start Jay Rodriguez made, and more importantly given that the aim of the club is to develop 50% of our first team through the academy, he was pleased to see Shaw, Chambers, Ward-Prowse and Stephens grasp their chance on the pitch.
